Oktoberfest is an annual beer festival and folk fair that takes place in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It typically runs for about 16-18 days, starting in late September and extending into the first weekend of October. While the name suggests that it happens mainly in October, most of the event occurs in September due to historically better weather conditions. The festival has a rich history dating back to 1810, when it was originally organized to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which included horse races and other public entertainment. Over the years, the event evolved and grew into the modern Oktoberfest that is known today.
