The Feast of St. Nicholas is celebrated in parts of Europe on 6 December. On the preceding evening of 5 December, Krampus Night or Krampusnacht sees the wicked hairy devil roaming the streets. Sometimes accompanying St. Nicholas, Krampus visits homes and businesses. The Saint, adorned in bishop's vestments, carries a golden staff. Unlike the North American Santa Claus, St. Nicholas focuses on the good children, leaving Krampus to handle the naughty ones. Nicholas brings gifts, and Krampus delivers coal and the Rute.
